Baby's First Year Quilt

I was contacted by a friend several months ago who knew I was doing t-shirt quilts.  She wanted to know if I could make a quilt of her daughter's onesies and outfits from her first year.  At first I wasn't sure how I was going to pull that off.... baby clothes are so tiny!  And since this was a little girl, there were ruffles! Lots of ruffles to work around.  She showed me some ideas she had seen online and it didn't take long for me to figure out how I was going to make her wish come true by preserving her sweet angel's clothes from her first year of life into a quilt that she could enjoy forever.

If you've been holding on to your kid's cute little outfits from when they were tiny and are interested in having a quilt made, don't hesitate to contact me.  joyleighlane@gmail.com or 850-896-1410

How many shirts do I need to make a T-Shirt Quilt??

Whenever someone is thinking about having a t-shirt quilt made, they always ask:   "How many shirts do you need?"   And my standard response is as many as you want.  But over the last few months I've learned that my standard response isn't very helpful!  In my experience I've had people come to me with garbage bags full of t-shirts wanting every last one of them in a quilt.  On the other end of the spectrum, I have a few friends who are trying to steal t-shirts from loved ones one at a time to be able to surprise them with a quilt at Christmas time and want to know the minimal number they need to make a quilt.

So for those of you out there who are searching high and low for a minimum number of t-shirts, the magic number is generally around 15.  And remember, if there is a design on the fronts and backs, we can use both sides so that would/could count as two t-shirts!    But for those of you who have like maybe 17 or 18 t-shirts, I can usually make it work by combining t-shirts  Here are some visuals so you have a better idea of what I'm talking about.

You can see where I combined the Wicked and Keyettes t-shirts into one block.   This works when the logos are smaller in size.   You can also see were we incorporated her name into the border of the quilt.   So for this quilt, we had 16 shirts and just combined two into one square.

Here we combined two front logos with a front smaller design.  So we essentially got 3 shirts into one square here.   Sometimes even where there are enough shirts, I may use pocket logos just to eliminate a bunch of "white space"  in the quilt.

Here I combined 4 pocket logos to create a square.  If I remember right, this quilt was a little short on t-shirts to make the right size, so I combined 4 front logos to make a "filler square'

Here I worked in three pocket logos as well as a side design into the border.
The possibilities are really endless.

Now most of those quilts pictured above were 15 square quilts, but for those of you on the other end of the spectrum, that have so many shirts you don't know which ones to pick, we can do a 20 square quilt, a 25 square quilt.... I've even done a 30 square quilt - and remember a square can be a single side of a t-shirt or we can still combine shirts to make squares like you saw above.

This quilt to the left actually just has 13 shirts in it, but due to the huge designs I had to increase the size of the squares so that nothing important would be cut out.  So if you're shirts have huge designs on them, it may not take as many to get to a decent size quilt .    The quilt to the right is made up of 22 t-shirts
And here is the the biggest quilt I've done to date.  It was HUGE!  This used 31 t-shirts total!

Anything is possible.  Just get your shirts together and email or call me and we will get it all figured out!!   Hope this helps you in figuring out how many t-shirts you want to put in your t-shirt quilt!  If you have any questions - please do not hesitate to send me an email (joyleighlane@gmail.com) or call me at

How much does it cost to have a T-Shirt Quilt made?

28 quilts and almost a year later I've finally sat down and come up with some base lines for prices for various size quilts to help you figure out what you want to do.

A few things you should know first:

  • A "square" is a block that is 12.5 x 12.5 inches in size.
  • A "BIG square" is a block that is 15.5 x 15.5 inches in size.
  • I can fit more than one T-shirt into a square  (In the picture below you can see where a square has two pocket logs and a strip from like the front of the shirt. I can fit as many as 4 pockets into one square.)

So with that in mind:  Here are the ideas for what a T-Shirt quilt will cost you.

15 Squares:  $280.00
15 BIG Squares: $310.00
20 Squares:  $315.00
20 BIG Squares:  $330.00
25 Squares:  $350
Personalized Baby Quilts: $275.00

Price includes material**, piecing, quilting, and binding.

**I really enjoy making the quilts something you'll cherish forever by helping you pick out fabric that reflects your own style or personality.  So, if you just want some really special fabric that is online, rare and expensive, then it may be a little more due to cost, but we can get that all squared away**

In the event that you live outside of the Southeast and your quilt will need to be shipped to you, there will be a shipping/postage charge. (But I didn't want to include that in the price since so many of the people asking for prices are in the Panama City/Montgomery area and I can get your quilts to you without having to ship them).

When you sit down and google "T-Shirt Quilts" you'll get many sites where people want to help you make your quilts, but many don't include sashing in their prices (the border fabric between the t-shirts), or a border fabric that makes your quilt different from everyone else's quilt.      If you have any questions about anything- please do not hesitate to ask.  You can reach me via email at:  joyleighlane@gmail.com or call me at 850-896-1410.

Quilts make great gifts!

Quilts make great gifts that will be cherished forever for the friend who is having her first child, or her third.  For the son who is graduating from college or from high school.  For the couple who are getting married who are die hard Auburn or Alabama fans.  A quilt is something that is personal and something that they can use for ever.  It's also something that not just anyone can sit down in a Saturday and knock out for you.

If you know someone that is graduating from high school, college or law school - consider a t-shirt quilt.
If you know someone that has played sports their whole life but don't want to part with their shirts- you might suggest a t-shirt quilt.
Do you have friends expecting a new baby?  Consider ordering them a custom baby quilt to fit their personalities or the nursery.

My quilts are high quality and reasonably priced.  I've done a lot of searching to see what other people charge to do quilts and online sites where you ship your shirts off and then they send you back your shirts all just sewed together without a stitch of personality or your taste incorporated into the quilt.

Here are just a few of the latest quilts that have been gifted:

This was a quilt I made as a gift for my dear friends, Kelly & Ryan out in Oklahoma for first baby boy- Mr. Brogan Pierce.  He made his entrance into the world on December 12, 2012!   Kelly & Ryan both loved the quilt.  I love this picture of Brogan relaxing on the quilt, it is one of my favorites!

Here are three shots of a soccer quilt made for a family friend and college grad.  His mom had been saving all of his shirts from the many years of all the soccer competitions from grade school all the way through college.  I found this fun soccer material and even worked his name from one of the back of the uniforms into the quilt at the bottom to give it a personal touch.  Ryan graduated on May 11 of this year and his folks gave him this quilt.  I hear he loved it!

If you have been been looking for someone to make you a personalized t-shirt quilt out of shirts you have been holding on to - look no further!  Shoot me an email at:  joyleighlane@gmail.com

The unveiling of Christmas quilts

Here are some pictures of quilts I've been sitting on because they were Christmas presents for folks and I didn't want to spoil the surprise for them!

Here is the OSU quilt I made for Derek's parents.  They are both went to OSU.  The inside is a variation of the log cabin pattern and it was a lot easier to make than I originally anticipated.  I love how it turned out!  The border is OSU cowboy team fabric.  We used the square dance quilting design on this quilt and binded it in black.

This is a quilt I made for Derek's niece, Aven.  I found the fabric that I used in the border and fell in love.  I was lucky and it wasn't too hard to find coordinating fabric that I equally loved.  I chose to have it quilted in a paisley design to match the paisley design inside the little elephants.  I bound it in the same purple color that I used in the quilt and the back is also purple so you can see the beautiful paisley stitching.

Here is a quilt I did for my nephew John.  He is a freshman in college and loves music.  I didn't work off a pattern, I just kind of sketched out this quilt once I found this fabric with the music notes.  It was harder to find than I thought.  The music note fabric wasn't cotton, it was that baby soft flannel so I used coordinating soft flannel with it.  It will be quilted with music notes of some type.  This one still has to be quilted, but I wrapped the quilt top and let him open it Christmas because I ran out of time to get it quilted before hand.  Can't wait to give him the finished quilt.

I've got a few more I'm working on that I'll post pictures of soon.  Hope everyone has a happy and safe new year!

Puzzles, Mushrooms & Volleyballs

Check out this varigated volleyball design we put on Kristina's volleyball quilt

These are two close ups of the volleyball quilt I did for Kristina!

I had to change the coloring on this picture so you could see the quilting pattern.
It's various mushrooms for the quilt shown below.

This is a close up of the puzzle pieces quilting design that we used on this Camp quilt for Melanie.  A picture of the whole quilt is below.   I really liked this design, because it matched the puzzle piece border we chose!

If you have shirts that you just can't stand to part with, consider making them into a blanket so you can keep them forever without taking up space in your dresser or your closet. Email me if I can be of any assistance. - joyleighlane@gmail.com
